291 Sugar 1967 Oakland by Mike Fry

Powered by a 12 cylinder Allison aircraft engine from WWII. The boat was lazy at the start, probably due to the high gears necessary because of the Allisons limited rpm ability, but did start to truck about half track. It had a very large custom Casale V-drive. It was allways a player, but not a dominator in blown gas hydro. The stringers are 10 inches tall. Wes Rose' V12s made 3200 hp and turned 4700 rpm.

Rain-X Record Challenger Rain-X Record Challenger

The Rain-X Record Challenger was a 25-foot jet hydroplane built by Craig Arfons. Arfons was trying to break the world water speed record of 317.6 MPH set by Ken Warby in 1978. The craft was traveling about 370 MPH on July 9, 1989 on Lake Jackson in Sebring, Florida, and Arfons let the afterburner run a few seconds longer than he initially had planned. By the time he shut down the afterburner and released the chute, it was too late. The craft lifted off the lake surface and the boat started to tumble out of control, disintegrating as it impacted.
