During qualifying, the engine in his boat seized while he was crossing the finish line at a speed of about 140 MPH. He was thrown from the craft and suffered massive head injuries. He was one of the founders of the National Drag Boat Association and was then serving as vice president. He was from Downey, California, and was survived by his wife, Billie, daughter, Sharon, and son, Jeff.
